![]() According to the Marine Corps, some men carved their names into chunks of wood strung around their necks. Others used old coins or bits of round lead or copper. Some marked their clothing with stencils or pinned-on paper tags. ![]() They were terrified of being buried in unmarked graves, so they found various ways to prevent that. Unofficially, identification tags came about during the Civil War because soldiers were afraid no one would be able to identify them if they died. Regardless of where the nickname started, the concept of an identification tag originated long before that. Another rumor said it was because the tags looked similar to the metal tag on a dog's collar. Other rumored origins of the nickname include World War II draftees calling them dog tags because they claimed they were treated like dogs. According to the SSA, Hearst referred to them as "dog tags" similar to those used in the military. He had heard the newly formed Social Security Administration was considering giving out nameplates for personal identification. In 1936, Hearst wanted to undermine support for President Franklin D. No lower price anywhere else as far as I can see.VIRIN: 190829-F-DD647-1004B Origins of the "Dog Tag" NicknameĪccording to the Army Historical Foundation, the term "dog tag" was first coined by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. ![]() Overall it is a great mask and everything is in great condition, and for $30, I would definable buy it if you need a cheap mask that is going to work. One more thing is the log that came with it is in french so I think the one I received might be a French model and not a Polish reproduction, not that it really matters to me though, I am just happy it works. But if you need to, it will serve you just fine. It is still usable according to its shelf life, but personally I will use my newer filters if I ever actually had to use a mask rather than the one it comes with. 10/10 contrition, however the one I revived is stamped with 01/02 so I believe it was made in 2002. The filter it comes with was sealed in its own plastic bag and was never opened to, no dings, scratches, nothing. Overall, the mask I received is fully functional and provides a full seal, I would trust my life with it. It has dirt smears and when I got it I immediately put it on, and could sense there are hints of cs gas still left on it. I see this as a pro, as if your a collector it adds personality from where its been and if you want to use it as a mask you can just clean it. One thing to take note of is that it does come very dirty however, the case and mask alike. However, There are no cracks, scratches, or any comprimises on mine just a few small dings and some dirt, and it provides a full seal. No drinking tube or catine for the drinking apparatus came with it, so know that. It comes in great condition overall, I received the mask, the carrying case, and a log of where its been from when it was in military use. This mask is great! I wont talk about the mask and its features, they are great, but I am sure you are more interested in the condition if you are already planning to buy this mask. The bag it comes in is awesome too a thick gage material with multiple storage pockets, it too was in great condition and can also attach molle style to other items you may have, like bug out gear. Mine did not come with the drinking straw either but I'm cool with that since I don't think you can find the canteen for these model masks anyway. The rubber on the mask is soft and supple and all of the components work like new. I got a size #2 which fits snug and seals with no leaks (I wear a medium hat size). It smells like a brand new set of rubber tires or garden hose. I don't think mine was ever used or issued only stored. When it arrived I couldn't believe the condition was so great ( a few scuffs and foggy lens) but, all was easily removed with a mild cleanser, resulting in a nearly brand new mask that's fully functional and smells like new rubber. I had some concerns after reading some of the reviews, so I called customer service and spoke with a representative and she put all my concerns to rest and made me feel very comfortable about purchasing one. I was a little skeptical about getting one of these surplus gas masks but am glad I did since they're 2-3 times more $ online elsewhere.
